1. Definition and Core Characteristics

A carbon steel round bar is a cylindrical metallic product primarily composed of iron and carbon, with carbon content ranging from 0.05% to 2.1% by weight. Unlike alloy steels, carbon steel round bars contain minimal alloying elements (typically ≤1.5% total for manganese, silicon, etc.), making them cost-effective and widely used in applications prioritizing mechanical strength, formability, and affordability.

The cylindrical shape offers uniform structural performance in all directions, ideal for load-bearing components requiring rotational symmetry. Diameters typically range from 6mm to 500mm, with lengths customizable from 1m to 12m, meeting diverse industrial and commercial needs.

2. Classification by Carbon Content

2.1 Low-Carbon Steel (Mild Steel, C ≤ 0.25%)

• Composition: Carbon (0.05-0.25%), manganese (0.3-0.9%), trace silicon.

• Properties:

• Ductility: Excellent formability via bending, welding, and machining (e.g., cold heading for bolts).

• Strength: Lower tensile strength (300-500 MPa) but high elongation (>25%).

• Applications: General engineering components (shafts, gears), construction reinforcement, automotive parts (chassis components), and consumer goods (furniture frames).

2.2 Medium-Carbon Steel (C = 0.25%-0.60%)

• Composition: Carbon (0.25-0.60%), higher manganese (0.6-1.65%) for improved hardenability.

• Properties:

• Heat Treatability: Responsive to quenching and tempering, achieving hardness up to HRC 50.

• Strength: Balanced tensile strength (600-1,000 MPa) and toughness.

• Applications: High-stress components like crankshafts, axles, connecting rods, and industrial gears (e.g., in machinery, railways, and agricultural equipment).

2.3 High-Carbon Steel (C = 0.60%-2.1%)

• Composition: Carbon (0.60-1.5%), minimal alloying elements (some grades add chromium/vanadium for wear resistance).

• Properties:

• Hardness: Extremely high hardness (HRC 55-65) after heat treatment, but lower ductility.

• Wear Resistance: Ideal for tools subject to friction (e.g., cutting edges).

• Applications: Cutting tools (knives, drills), springs (due to high yield strength), and wear-resistant parts (molds, punches, saw blades).
